AirDrop alternatives for Android and Mac

Android-to-Mac sharing now has more than one path. Some Android phones support Google's native Quick Share-to-AirDrop interoperability; other setups can use a Mac-side Quick Share client, USB MTP, or cloud storage. Availability varies by phone and software.

1. Quick Share between Mac, Android, and Windows

Nearby Drop is an independent macOS menu bar app for sending and receiving files with compatible Android and Windows Quick Share devices, browsing Android storage over USB MTP, and sharing from Finder. Two-way Windows support ships in v2.3.1; both directions passed in a final Debug test with one Windows PC, while the packaged release was not separately device-tested. Nearby Drop runs on the Mac; no Nearby Drop Windows app is required. See the Mac and Windows setup guide. Broader Windows device testing is still limited.

Wireless discovery needs a reachable local network. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, and hotspot behavior can affect whether the Mac appears. LTE-only phone-hotspot discovery has not been verified for this release. Transfer speed varies with the devices, signal, and network.

Mac-generated QR sending is a separate Mac-to-Android path and passed with a Pixel 8 Pro in a Debug test build. Nearby Drop's in-app camera also received an Android-generated QR transfer from Pixel 8 Pro during v2.3.2 validation; this fix is included in the current release.

2. USB MTP with Nearby Drop

A USB cable provides a wired option when wireless discovery is inconvenient. Connect the phone, unlock it, select File Transfer or MTP in Android's USB prompt, then browse and copy files from Nearby Drop's USB tab. Speed depends on the phone, cable, and storage.

3. Cloud storage

A cloud drive can move files between devices that are not on the same network. It requires an internet connection and usually involves uploading from one device and downloading on the other. Check the provider's storage, privacy, and data settings.

Which option should you use?

  • Choose Nearby Drop for Android Quick Share or for a Mac-to-Windows Quick Share transfer when both devices can discover one another on the local network.
  • Choose USB MTP for a wired connection or when local wireless discovery is unavailable.
  • Choose cloud storage when the devices are apart or a shared local connection is not practical.
  • Use native Quick Share-to-AirDrop when your Android phone and Mac meet Google's current compatibility requirements; otherwise use Nearby Drop, USB MTP, or cloud storage.

About Nearby Drop

Nearby Drop is free to download for macOS 14 or later and supports Apple silicon and Intel Macs. The app is distributed under a proprietary license and is not affiliated with Google or Apple. The current download is ad hoc signed and not notarized, so macOS may show a Gatekeeper warning; review the repository and release details before installing.
